So, you've just bought a pretty new crystal, now what? Crystals pick up all sorts of energy so it's important to cleanse them. Cleansing your crystals is almost like giving them a detox and fresh start by removing all unwanted energies. After you've done this, it's a good idea to reprogram them to work with you to its full potential.
The cleansing methods I'm about to show you neutralize the charge of positive ions by releasing lots of negative ions, let me explain... Have you ever felt overwhelmed, drained and burnt out - but you don't know why? Everybody has an electromagnetic field or an aura, as it's often called. When our aura accumulates too many positive ions, these drained feelings are the result! So cleansing will get you feeling balanced and grounded in no time.
It's the same for crystals - if you feel like the energy is a little off, you should cleanse. There's no correct answer that tells you how often to cleanse your crystals, just do what you feel deep down is right, but I always recommend cleansing a crystal as soon as you get it. Otherwise, I like to cleanse mine on the full moon tomake space for bringing in new projects during the other lunar phases.
How do I do it?
Before reading any further, please research which method is compatible for your crystals, as using the wrong one could damage them. Tip: most crystals ending in "ite" aren't water safe.
Smudging
The ancient use of 'Sacred plants' go all the way back to shamanic traditions and other ancient cultures; used to purify a space and remove negative energy. Scientific studies have shown that burning these aromatic plants can not only provide a good smell, but spreads antibacterial elements.
Smudging is quick, easy and arguably my favourite! This method is ideal for crystals which aren't water safe, such as selenite, malachite and peacock ore.
If its a room that needs cleansing, you can lie the herb in an abalone shell and use a feather to waft the smoke around the room.
Step 1
Light your sage or palo santo and allow it to burn for a few moments.
Step 2
Step 3
Salt Water
Salt water has been used for centuries by Ancient Egyptians, Buddhists and Witches because it absorbs unwanted energy and banishes negativity, while also providing protection.
Submerge your crystals in a pool of salt water if you can collect a bowl fresh from the ocean, that's great! Otherwise mix himalayan salt and bottled water at home until the salt has fully dissolved. You can leave them submerged for a few hours or overnight. Rinse and pat dry.
Step 1
Submerge your crystals in a pool of salt water

Step 3
Moonlight
Place your crystal on your windowsill or even better - directly on the earth ( this will allow mother nature to do her thing and give your crystals an extra boost ) when the full moon is out. The full moon represents enlightenment and illuminating our subconscious mind so it really is the perfect recipe for a crystal detox. Leave them overnight as this will allow them time to reset and recharge. This energy will feed and strengthen your stones in a natural yet very powerful way. Remember move your crystals before 11am the next morning to ensure they don't get sun damaged!
Step 1
Place your crystal in moonlight
Step 2
Step 3
Selenite
Selenite is a 'self cleansing' which means they have the ability to cleanse other themselves and other crystals naturally, without any extra help. This method is the most simple of all and requires no effort at all. Just place your crystals on a selenite slab or charging plate and you're done!
